As a Charleston-based engagement photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing countless love stories, and Colby and Derek’s engagement session at Isle of Palms was truly a special one. This serene coastal setting perfectly matched their deep connection to nature and love for peaceful, quiet moments spent together.
Colby and Derek’s love story began back in high school during a 4th period World Geography class. They first noticed each other’s kindness, greeting one another every day, and over time, that kindness blossomed into a beautiful relationship. They’ve now been together for 6.5 years, and in the next five years, they envision building a wonderful life together somewhere in the Southeast, possibly with a dog to complete their family.
For their engagement session, Isle of Palms was the ideal location to capture the essence of what they love most—spending time together surrounded by nature. Some of their most cherished moments as a couple are during walks at sunrise or sunset, looking for seashells, or pointing out bird species. These peaceful, intimate experiences make them feel like the only two people in the world, and it was exactly this kind of romance we wanted to reflect in their photos.
Colby shared with me the qualities she loves most about Derek, from his kindness and compassion to his endless curiosity about the world around him. She remembers first noticing his kind eyes, and over the years, she has come to admire his selflessness, his empathy for people from all walks of life, and his desire to keep learning and growing. For her, life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to spend each day with Derek by her side.
Derek, in turn, describes Colby as one of the most selfless individuals he knows. Her generosity, kindness, and drive to succeed are qualities he deeply respects and admires. Whether they’re laughing together or enjoying quiet moments of peace, Derek always feels at ease when they’re together—a feeling that shines through in their engagement photos.
The soft hues of the ocean at Isle of Palms, paired with the couple’s love for the outdoors, created a tranquil, romantic backdrop for their session. We were able to capture beautiful moments as the sun set, reflecting the peaceful and loving relationship they’ve built over the years. From candid laughter to quiet embraces, every frame was a testament to their deep bond.
I was also honored to photograph their wedding at Cypress Garden in 2024, continuing to document their journey together as they move into the next chapter of their lives.
Isle of Palms is a stunning location for engagement photos, offering a mix of natural beauty and coastal charm.
