When it comes to photography, lighting is everything. As a professional photographer based in beautiful Charleston, SC, I’m fortunate to work in a city that offers some of the best outdoor lighting opportunities. With approximately 200 sunny days each year, Charleston is an ideal backdrop for capturing stunning moments in natural light. However, planning a photo session isn’t just about picking a sunny day — it requires thoughtful coordination, especially when it comes to weather.
Weather Concerns: How We Handle Them
One of the most common questions we receive from clients is about the weather. It’s understandable — many clients invest in other vendors or book specific venues for their sessions, and naturally, weather becomes a concern. At Charleston Photo Art, we prioritize our clients’ experience and always strive to ensure that they have the best lighting possible for their photos, based on both our availability and theirs.
Charleston’s weather can be unpredictable, and stressing about it too far in advance often isn’t helpful. Instead, we recommend waiting until the final days leading up to your session to evaluate the forecast. In most cases, closer to the session date, we can adjust the time for optimal lighting or reschedule if necessary, again considering availability on both sides.
It’s important to note that out of the hundreds of sessions we photograph each year, nearly 100% take place as planned. Even when the weather appears less than ideal, we are often able to reschedule or adjust the session. And for those sessions that simply cannot be rescheduled, such as proposals or weddings, we always have backup options ready. For example, Charleston offers numerous parks with covered gazebos, and downtown is home to public locations with porches or piazzas that can serve as beautiful alternatives for an indoor or semi-sheltered session.
What Is Good Weather for Photography?
Many people assume that a sunny day equals perfect weather for photos — but that’s not always true. In fact, the best lighting conditions often occur during the “golden hours” — just after sunrise or just before sunset. On both cloudy and sunny days, this time of day offers beautiful, soft lighting that enhances every photo.
Cloudy days, in particular, can offer even more benefits. The clouds act as a natural diffuser, reducing harsh shadows, minimizing squinting, and keeping everyone cool. Cloudy weather often leads to photos with even, flattering lighting and softer, more romantic tones.
Worried About “Grey” Photos? Charleston’s Vibrance Always Shines Through
Another concern some clients have is that overcast weather will result in dull, “turd grey” photos. But in Charleston, that’s rarely a problem! Thanks to the city’s unique climate, lush flora, and vibrant architecture, Charleston offers beautiful pops of color all year round — even in the winter. From the pastel hues of Rainbow Row to the colorful gardens and historic streets, there’s always something lively and vibrant to work with in the background. No matter the season or weather, Charleston’s natural and architectural beauty ensures your photos will remain full of color and life.
Embracing the Elements: Rain and Creativity
If rain does make an appearance during your session, don’t worry! I always come prepared with clear umbrellas, which can add a unique and whimsical touch to your photos. A little rain often creates a beautifully romantic atmosphere, perfect for capturing reflections and cinematic moments reminiscent of your favorite movies.
In fact, some of the most stunning beach sunsets I’ve ever photographed occurred right after a storm had passed. The sky often displays vibrant colors, and the light that follows a storm is magical. When life gives us rain, we make lemonade — transforming what might seem like a challenge into a creative opportunity for unforgettable images.
At Charleston Photo Art, we believe that every session is an opportunity to create something special, regardless of the weather. Whether the skies are sunny or cloudy, or even if there’s a bit of rain, we know how to make the most of the elements to ensure your photos are beautiful, vibrant, and unique. Trust us to take care of the details so that you can focus on enjoying the moment.
