Here are my top tips to help you plan the perfect proposal while keeping things stress-free and magical for both you and your partner.
Plan Extra Time for Everything
Life is unpredictable, and the last thing you want on your proposal day is to feel rushed. Be sure to allow for plenty of extra time between your activities. For example, if you’ve booked a 30-minute proposal photography session, plan for your next booking — whether it’s a carriage ride or a dinner reservation — to begin at least an hour later. This buffer ensures you can enjoy the moment without worrying about being late to the next stop. This tip also allows for flexibility in case of any delays, unexpected events, or if you simply want to bask in the glow of the engagement for a little longer.
Make Sure Your Partner Looks (and Feels) Amazing
One of the most common regrets I hear after proposals is: “I wish I had dressed up!” or “I wish I had my nails done.” These small details can make a big difference, both for your partner’s confidence and for the photos. The challenge is keeping the proposal a surprise while ensuring your partner feels their best.
Here’s a tip: plan a special event that naturally requires dressing up, like a fancy dinner or a romantic date night. If you’re worried about your partner not having their nails done, you can enlist the help of a close friend or family member to invite them to a salon beforehand. Alternatively, a spontaneous gift of a spa day is always a great way to ensure your partner feels pampered — while still keeping the surprise intact.

Ways to Hide the Ring
Hiding the engagement ring can be a challenge, especially if the ring box is large and bulky. A box bulging out of your pocket can easily spoil the surprise, so consider using a smaller or slimmer ring box that’s easier to keep hidden. The best hiding spot is often a jacket pocket, offering both convenience and discretion. However, if a jacket isn’t an option, wearing loose clothing can help cover your pockets and keep the ring hidden. You can also try tucking the ring inside a long sock — just be prepared to “tie” your shoes right before the proposal. If it’s too late to switch to a smaller box, consider placing the ring in a sunglass case, or using a small locket on your keychain. You could even keep the ring in your pocket without its box to avoid raising any suspicions. Whatever method you choose, make sure it’s discreet enough to keep your secret safe!
Have a Backup Plan for Bad Weather
