This is one of our favorite locations at Middleton Place. Antique-style vases are thoughtfully placed in front of the Butterfly Lakes, creating a beautifully balanced composition. What makes this spot truly special for engagement photography is its versatility. The setting allows us to capture both partners’ faces and emotions from any angle, ensuring genuine and heartfelt moments are highlighted. The tranquil beauty of this location helps create natural, spontaneous photos, making it ideal for capturing all the emotions of your engagement session, no matter the conditions we encounter.

2. Camellia Gardens

The famous Camellia Gardens at Middleton Place offer a stunning and vibrant backdrop for engagement photos, particularly during the winter months when the Camellias are in full bloom. These gardens are filled with blooming bushes, creating endless possibilities for beautiful shots. From a distance, the flowers form a lush green wall or tunnel effect, while close-up shots capture the intricate details of each blossom. The vibrant colors and natural beauty of this location will add an emotional and timeless touch to your engagement photos.

3. The Cherubs’ Monument

A troupe of five cherubs is nestled along one of the garden paths at Middleton Place. You'll discover them at the end of a straight, shrub-lined walkway that naturally draws you in. The color of the monument offers a striking contrast to the lush greenery surrounding it. Cherubs, as timeless symbols of romance, add a touch of whimsy and elegance to your photos, bringing diversity and a distinctive backdrop to your engagement session.

4. The Field

Facing the historic house, this open field offers a charming, rustic backdrop for your engagement photos. If you're lucky, you'll have some adorable companions—cute, fluffy sheep peacefully grazing in the background, adding a touch of whimsy and harmony to your session. Even if the sheep aren’t around, this location is still perfect for creating beautiful images, whether you’re capturing a romantic picnic or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. It’s an idyllic spot that adds a relaxed and timeless feel to your engagement photos.

5. The Gardens

Middleton Place is renowned for its meticulously designed geometrical gardens, recognized as America's oldest landscaped gardens. These well-cared-for gardens provide an incredible backdrop for all types of engagement photos. The perfectly manicured greenery looks stunning whether captured from a distance or up close, adding a unique yet natural element to your photos. The structured beauty of these gardens brings a timeless and elegant touch to every image, making them a truly special location for your session.

6. Near the Pond

Right next to the entrance, this pond stands out among the several others at Middleton Place. What sets it apart are the elegant fountains, which add a refreshing touch to photos. If you're lucky, you may even spot the resident family of swans that call this pond home. The trees here also have a unique beauty, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of this location. Whether you stand by the water, sit on the nearby bench, or use the trees and fountain as your backdrop, this spot offers endless opportunities for capturing stunning, romantic photos. It’s truly a hidden gem for engagement photography.

7. Wooden Arch

This modern element near the entrance adds a unique touch to your engagement photos. The massive wooden arch, with its minimalistic design, won’t overpower your images but will subtly enhance the composition. It creates a beautiful “frame inside a frame” effect, adding depth and interest to your photos. Its clean lines provide a perfect balance to the natural surroundings, making it an excellent backdrop for diverse and creative shots.

8. The Footsteps Beside the House Ruins

Middleton Place has witnessed many historical events over the years, and while some of the buildings were damaged and never restored, the remnants offer a glimpse into the plantation’s storied past. The forged fence and gates that survived serve as a poignant reminder of history. This location is perfect for those who appreciate the unique blend of historical structures and lush greenery, creating a striking and memorable backdrop for engagement photography.

9. The Oldest Oak

An ancient oak tree grows by the water at Middleton Place, leaning gently toward the shore as if in a relaxed pose. Its massive branches are supported to prevent them from touching the ground, and one of the branches even forms a beautiful arch. Arches make for wonderful elements in photography, adding a natural frame to your images. If this spot appeals to you, be prepared for a short walk to reach it, but trust us—it’s well worth the journey for the stunning photos you’ll capture here.

10. By the River

Long ago, water from the Ashley River was used to irrigate the rice fields at Middleton Place. Today, this spot has transformed into a beautiful location for romantic engagement photos. A magnificent oak tree stands here, gazing at its own reflection in the water. No matter the weather, this location always provides a picturesque and serene setting for capturing timeless moments.

11. House Museum

The South Flanker, now known as the House Museum, is a must-see for all Middleton Place visitors. Originally built in 1755 as gentlemen’s guest quarters and a business office, it was part of Henry Middleton’s grand three-building residential complex that once overlooked the Ashley River. While the North Flanker and the Main House no longer stand, the South Flanker remains, preserving the plantation’s rich history. Surrounded by palms and greenery, this beautifully preserved building offers a stunning and historically significant backdrop for a dreamy engagement session, blending timeless architecture with natural beauty.

12. Behind the House Museum

The house boasts a remarkable appearance, with its brown bricks and black window shutters adding a touch of mystery to its charm. This makes it an outstanding background, no matter the angle or distance. Whether you choose to take photos up close or from afar, the results are sure to impress. This location offers the perfect combination of lush greenery and an elegant, historic building, providing a timeless and stylish backdrop for your engagement photos.

13. A Path Near the Lake

This charming and romantic path is the perfect spot for engagement photos, especially in spring when it becomes truly magical. Lined with a stunning collection of azaleas, the path comes alive during the blooming season, with vibrant flowers adding a burst of color to the lush greenery. The draping Spanish moss enhances the enchanting atmosphere, making it an idyllic backdrop. Even outside of spring, this path retains its charm and beauty, offering a timeless, romantic setting for your engagement photos.

14. The Bridge

This beautiful bridge at Middleton Place offers yet another fantastic location for engagement photography. We love it for its ability to provide a variety of stunning photo opportunities. While we don’t typically use this spot for proposals, it's perfect for capturing the couple in a picturesque setting. The bridge’s low height allows for comfortable shooting from any angle, and it looks spectacular whether photographed up close or from a distance, making it an ideal feature for creating memorable images.

15. The Bench Under the Tree Branch

This picturesque location is situated at the top of a hill, offering a unique and serene setting for your engagement photos. An old tree nearby extends its branches toward the ground, forming a natural frame that enhances the composition of your images. With its elevated position and peaceful atmosphere, this spot provides a rare opportunity to capture stunning, intimate moments surrounded by nature. Don’t miss the chance to make the most of this beautiful and tranquil location during your session.

16. The Benches

As a team of experienced engagement photographers, we’ve discovered several charming benches scattered throughout Middleton Place. Though each bench is unique, they all create stunning photo opportunities. Surrounded by lush green bushes and trees, these benches offer a peaceful and romantic setting. Some are tucked away at the end of garden paths, allowing us to capture beautiful shots from a distance, with the greenery forming a natural tunnel. This adds a touch of magic and intimacy to your engagement photos, making every moment feel even more special.

17. The Watermill

Middleton Place is home to several historic buildings, and if you appreciate architecture and old structures, the Watermill is a must-see. The original watermill was built in the mid-19th century, and today, a charming square building stands beside a tranquil pond. The peaceful landscape surrounding the Watermill offers a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for quiet moments and capturing beautiful engagement photos away from the bustle. This hidden gem adds a touch of history and calm to your session, creating a picturesque backdrop for a sunset engagement photo session at Middleton Place.

18. The Footsteps Under the Tree

A massive tree and a charming staircase create a perfect combination for your engagement photos. The tree, draped in greenery and Spanish moss, serves as a beautiful backdrop on its own, but the addition of the staircase elevates the scene by adding balance and clean, straight lines to the composition. No matter the distance or angle we choose, the result is consistently impressive, making this location a standout for creating timeless and captivating images.

19. The Stableyard

This demonstration area, built in the 1930s, offers a glimpse into plantation life during the 18th and 19th centuries. It includes a smithery, pottery workshop, spinning room, barnyard, and a freedman’s residence. Visitors can experience how enslaved people lived and worked on the plantation, crafting tools, clothing, and pottery. This location provides not only a rich educational experience but also a fascinating and historically significant backdrop for engagement photos, adding depth and meaning to the images captured here.

20. Spanish Moss

A magical element found throughout the trees at Middleton Place is the enchanting Spanish moss. Thankfully, Middleton’s location, far from the ocean, protects it from strong winds that could otherwise blow the moss away. If you choose Middleton for your engagement session, you can be sure that the iconic Spanish moss will grace many of your photos, adding a timeless and romantic touch to your images.

21. Brick Fence

This old fence was likely restored during the major restoration process that took place nearly a century ago, serving as a reminder of the long history of Middleton Place. Its modest height makes it versatile, allowing it to be more than just a background element—it can also act as a prop. You can lean on it for more relaxed, casual photos or stand beside it for a cozy, elegant composition. Either way, the fence adds a touch of history and charm to your engagement photos.
We’re confident these locations have sparked your imagination. They look even more breathtaking in person. The manicured, sunlit lawns and gardens at Middleton Place provide a perfect setting for any photos, especially those as important as your engagement. You’ll notice that the spaces are wide and open, creating a sense of airiness in the final images. When you look at them, you can almost feel the fresh breeze and warm sunlight. As a team of professional engagement photographers, we love capturing love stories at Middleton Place. Together, with our dedication and your unique connection, we’ll create priceless, emotional photos you’ll treasure forever.
